HOME BASED EMPLOYMENT

Until two hundred years ago, relatively few people actually left home to go to work. Farms were mini-industries, involved in the packing, preparing and preserving of its produce, a small community where everyone contributed to the end product. Although the labour was backbreaking hard at crucial times such as harvesting, there were some definite advantages to such a system of home based employment. Most importantly, it enabled children to grow up with both parents playing a very active role in their lives and their upbringing. Even in the case of artisans and crafters such as bakers, tailors, millers, coopers and smiths, the workshop often incorporated the family living quarters, meaning that most persons could be economically active while remaining in close proximity to their nearest and dearest.

The industrial revolution, however, changed all that and made it seem desirable to millions to have a job away from where they lived. Today, much of the world is arranged to accommodate the fact that most people work somewhere other than where they live. Most cities are serviced by extensive networks of public transport, which become uncomfortably congested at those peak times when everyone travels to and from their work. A rigidly structured education system was also introduced to ensure that children are kept gainfully occupied while parents are out earning the mounting costs of raising them. If you find yourself longing sometimes to escape the madness of the rat race, you might be ready to consider home based employment.

How does an average Joe make a living without going to work? These days, that might be a lot simpler than it used to be. The world wide web, first launched for public consumption in 1992, has since evolved to become a massive global market place where many forms of home based employment are on offer. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection and a little initiative.

There are, for instance, many skills specifically required to make the Internet function the way it does. Writers produce large volumes of copy and data that in turn draws visitors to specific sites. Graphic web designers create the beautiful graphics, background and animations that make certain web pages pleasing to the eye. Both professions offer good potential for home based employment. For artists and writers, what they produce, is far more important than where in the world they are located.

On another level, persons with a product or service to sell are only just beginning to realize the incredible marketing potential of the Internet. Predictably, advertisements have invaded this largely unregulated medium. This development has greatly enhanced the earning potential of web sites. As a result, blogging, or the publishing of an online web journal has now become a form of home based employment for some.

A large variety of activities can serve to earn money for any man or woman who is home based. Employment such as copywriting, admin, proofreading, editing and bookkeeping can be undertaken from the comfort of your own home. Artists, architects and marketing consultants can also work from home with the right tools of the trade. Imagine the benefits - no boss breathing down your neck, no public transport costs or woes, and you are there for your kids when they need you.
